Fulano, You make the RMWD sound like a lemonade stand. There is much more involved in a water company including treating water, piping water, digging, electrical, and on and on and on. I am sure a monkey could do your job. You truly are an idiot.
Please Andrea, can you tell us again about how your uncle single handedly fixed the water problem and brought all of us ungrateful residents home? Please?
We were not affected by the fire, but this was an eye openeing experience,we would like to "fire proof" our home. Where do we go to aplly for a building permit??

Gee, thanks Andrea. That means I'm now qualified to manage the RMWD."
Yes, Fulano, you must be. So please run for the board with all your great ideas, which would be...?
"Please Andrea, can you tell us again about how your uncle single handedly fixed the water problem and brought all of us ungrateful residents home? Please?"
Are you serious? Wow! My uncle loses his home and in the meantime helps you out and all you can do is put out a sarcastic remark like this? This truly does show how ungrateful you are. I can't believe that you are more concerned about the fact that you didn't have water for a few days and not about the fact that it took HOURS for you to evacuate your home? Why aren't you going after whomever called for the evacuation of the town but then didn't have evacuation procedures in place? There weren't officers at intersections to wave you through. In fact you all stopped at the 4 way stop in Lakeside which should have been an open way for you to get out. And how many hours did it take for them to close the oncoming traffic lanes so that you could use them too? If the winds had changed and the fires had come towards town or 67 or 78, then thousands would have died? Yet you don't hear anything about that. All you hear is how you didn't have water when you came home. So I guess no water in your home is more important than a screwed up evacuation that could have caused numerous deaths?
You'll have to pardon our sarcasm. We're sure your uncle made a super effort to help with the disaster, notwithstanding his own personal loss. But, your uncle was not in the decision-making loop at RMWD. Perhaps if he was, things would have worked out a little better.
You need to step back and look at the facts, which have now been published in the Sentinel and elsewhere.
Fact #1: The Poway pump plant lost power at 3PM 10/23/2007.
Fact #2: The RMWD was unaware of the power loss until approximately 12 hours later, in the early hours of 10/24/2007 when a low-pressure alarm went off.
Fact #3: The first generator was not up and running to pump water until 12:45AM 10/25/2007
Therefore, Andrea, a full 34 hours elapsed between the power failure and the restoration of power. In the meantime the system lost pressure, requiring a restart, retesting and ban on water use for several days. It also delayed the return of Ramona residents for some 48 hours.
Now, let us look at what the RMWD were telling us during this same period:
Ron Mulick, Ramona's water operations manager, as reported by the Sentinel, said he has heard reports of people going through neighborhoods and turning meters on. He said that's a huge problem and that just delays the restoration of the system for everyone.
At the same time, Steve Brammell, RMWD general manager was telling the EOC that “more meters did not have to be shut off, water was being introduced at the system, and it was overcoming whatever losses. ..“It wasn’t ever not gaining.”
It does not take a rocket scientist to see that senior management of the RMWD were running a Chinese fire drill.
Andrea needs to stop trying to protect her uncle. It is making him sound incapable of defending his own actions and the job he is suppose to be doing. Losing his house was terrible...but he still needed to get his job done, the same way others in his same situation continued to do. Now she is trying to justify things by bringing up other things that happened during the fire and evacuation and people making those decisions probably lost their homes also. So Andrea thinks her uncles loss was much more important than anyone else involved with the fire decisions, so he wasn't able to think straight to do the right thing, but he lost his house so that makes it ok?? Stop Andrea..I'm surprised your uncle hasn't already asked you to stop defending him...

You are one cold-hearted person. Yes I do think my uncle's loss was more important than anyone else involved with the fire decisions. He lost his house and 2 animals. Anyone else making fire decisions lose their house? Anyone? When did I say "he couldn't think straight". I never said that and on the contrary I pointed out that even though he lost his home, he still volunteered to work 16 hour days for RMWD. My uncle has his own company. He was asked, as a favor, to come help the RMWD because he has done some contract work for them before. He didn't spend last week sifting through the ashes of his home. He spent it working 16 hour days with RMWD. He put that first. I am amazed at your complete lack of sensitivity and compassion. As far as my uncle defending himself, he doesn't have the time to do that or the resources. HE LOST HIS HOUSE, you cold-hearted a-hole.
Fulano, Yes, the Sentinel did report that there was a MAJOR communication issue. Could things have been handled better? Yes. I have never denied that. But the way in which you have all attacked these people personally is horrendous. The fact that there were sheriff's at the RMWD meeting on Tuesday to escort RMWD management to their cars is a frightening thought. These people feel they need protection from their fellow town-members. That is unbelievable to me. 20/20 hindsight and armchair quarterbacking are always present after an emergency. This is true of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Both of those events were unthinkable until they happened. This fire was unthinkable and yet it happened. Issues with RMWD, certainly but the personal attacks and threats to the management, appalling.
Anonymous 3:29PM "Now she is trying to justify things by bringing up other things that happened during the fire and evacuation and people making those decisions probably lost their homes also."
I am just trying to point out that there are other things that you all should be upset about. Where is the blog about the evacuation procedures? Where are the angry citizens talking about that? And in everything I have read online, I haven't heard about one person involved in the evacuation having lost their home. Not that that was ever my point. Please show me where I said that people weren't thinking straight because they lost their homes. Never said that.

Can't we please stop the nonsense and blame game about the water issue. It's over so let's start the healing process and lend a hand to those in need. We are possibly still stressed out but let it go - time to move on!!!!

Funny, most people in town think they need protection from the RMWD management!

Do you happen to know who is George Santayana? He is not the person for whom our Santa Ana winds are named. He is the person who said, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
It's not over until we learn from our mistakes and fix the problems.
I am currently doing research and collecting data regarding large animal rescue, horses etc., during the Cedar and Witch Fire. If you could please contact me with any information that you may have, including related equine deaths, experiences with humane society, animal control or other rescue/ evacuation groups or your own personal evacuation story, I'd be very grateful. My goal is to put together an emergency evacuation plan, that will better address the needs of our equine and larger animals, and bring it before congress. Additionally I am working to accumulate a list of ranch/horse owners with a contac name/#, so that in the event of another fire, whether in Ramona, Julian, anywhere in San Diego Country, calls will go out immediately by me, to these contacts. I am also putting together a list of organizations/people, who are willing to evacuate horses/larger animals, during a disaster. If you are interested in helping me with my efforts or providing me with any information or suggestions on any of the above, e.mail me at melody@homesbymelody.com or call me at 858-583-6230. Thank you.
So much talk from officials about preparedness but it seems so obvious that if fire breaks would resume being cut (I think preventative fire care stopped in mid 80's) and 100 or 200 feet on each side of highways and major roads we would have eliminated the whole mess. Early Calif in order to protect the oaks and native plants people did annual burns and groomed the oaks since they were a food source knocking off dead branches and such. This way of life eliminated wildfires in inhabited areas. There is a great article on environmentalist endangering the majestic oaks because of what they think is good for the land. I believe it is August 1994, Discover Magazine. This notion of growing fuel for fire MUST stop. Why don't officials have the balls to do what it right? Also, to be considered as manditory: http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071025/news_1n25stay.html# and http://www.rsf-fire.org/education/programs/adult_shelterinplace.asp
It was very scary to see our neglected, bottlenecking roads be the access out for the manditory evacuation on 10/21. I sat in K Mart parking lot for many hours since fires threatened to jump both 78 and 67 yet people were ordered to head out on these congested roads that for many hours were stopped or top spead of 2-3 miles per hour. Will this bring attention to bringing roads up to standards for such a population that is so sorely underestimated by about 1/3?
My name is Sean and I am real estate photographer here in Ramona. If you would like to see some pictures that I took of the Witch Creek Fire. http://ramonafire2007.blogspot.com
I'm gonnna take it to school but want anyone to easily know its an iphone. Should i get a regular plastic or rubber case and put it in my pocket(may be too big for my pockets), or should i get that horizontal leather case that clip on your belt?
